Elevated atmospheric CO 2 changes defence allocation in wheat but herbivore resistance persists.

Abstract: Predicting how plants allocate to different anti-herbivore defences in response to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations is important for understanding future patterns of crop susceptibility to herbivory. Theories of defence allocation, especially in the context of environmental change, largely overlook the role of silicon (Si), despite it being the major anti-herbivore defence in the Poaceae.

ABSTRACT. - Background:Diaporthe caulivora is a fungal pathogen causing stem canker in soybean worldwide. The generation of genomic and transcriptomic information of this ascomycete, together with a comparative genomic approach with other pathogens of this genus, will contribute to get insights into the molecular basis of pathogenicity strategies used by D. caulivora and other Diaporthe species. Results:In the present work, the nuclear genome of D. caulivora isolate (D57) was resolved, and a comprehensive annotation based on gene expression and genomic analysis is provided.

ABSTRACT. - Drought limits crop productivity and reduces yield stability. Drought tolerance as a selection criterion in breeding programs requires the development of high-throughput, precise, and low-cost phenotyping strategies. We developed a mathematical model, based on biological approaches, for evaluating soybean plants? response to drought under controlled growth conditions. The model describes the kinetics of water consumption of a plant pot substrate system (PPS) with low sampling requirements.

ABSTRACT. - Citrus sour rot caused by Geotrichum citri-aurantii is one of the most important postharvest diseases in citrus fruit, causing huge economic losses. Traditionally, it has been controlled by the postharvest application of guazatine and propiconazole fungicides, but restrictions in their use make it urgent to find an alternative for sour rot management. Natamycin, a common food preservative, and the organosulfuric compounds extracted from Allium species are safe food additives that control different foodborne pathogens.

Irrigation effects on the formation of soil organic matter from aboveground plant litter inputs in semiarid agricultural systems.

ABSTRACT:In semiarid agricultural systems, irrigation may increase soil organic matter (SOM) due to higher biomass production. However, aboveground production tends to increase more than belowground biomass, and in no-till systems SOM responses to irrigation would strongly depend on the fate of crop residues left on the soil surface. Litter decomposition and SOM formation can also be affected by irrigation due to changes in water dynamics, but little is known about the impacts of irrigation on the pathways of SOM formation.

ABSTRACT. - Counting ticks on one side of a bovine has been widely used to estimate the overall number of ticks; however, the accuracy of this method has not been determined. This work aimed to evaluate the one-side technique for counting ticks, identify bovines with a higher level of infestation, and determine the prevalence of infestation of adults and calves. To evaluate the one-side technique, ticks were counted on both sides of 352 bovines from three farms in nine months, and total numbers were correlated with the numbers counted on the left sides.

ABSTRACT.- In the Great Plains of central North America, sustainable livestock production is dependent on matching the timing of forage availability and quality with animal intake demands. Advances in remote sensing technology provide accurate information for forage quantity. However, similar efforts for forage quality are lacking. Crude protein (CP) content is one of the most relevant forage quality determinants of individual animal intake, especially below an 8% threshold for growing animals.
