ABSTRACT.- The generation of genetically modified animals has made possible to achieve great scientific advances in several fields. In 2006 we set up a Technological Unit at Institut Pasteur of Montevideo capable of conducting our own research program and provide researchers of Uruguay and the region with genetically modified mouse models. In 2014, we implemented the CRISPR/Cas9 system, which allowed us to broaden the scope of our activity and develop other projects involving mice and sheep, thus positioning this laboratory as a reference technological platform in South America.

Neotropical studies on Hymenochaetaceae:Unveiling the diversity and endemicity of Phellinotus.

Phellinotus, a neotropical genus of wood-decay fungi commonly found on living members of the Fabaceae family, was initially described as containing two species, P. neoaridus and P. piptadeniae. The members of this genus, along with six other well-established genera and some unresolved lineages, are the current representatives of the ?phellinotus clade?. On the other hand, based on a two-loci phylogenetic analysis, some entities/lineages of the ?phellinotus clade? have been found in Fomitiporella s.l.

ABSTRACT.- The evaluation of sheep feed intake (FI) in feed efficiency tests is expensive. Decreasing the test period could be a resource-saving tool by reducing the cost of evaluating each animal and allowing to test a greater number of animals per year. For this reason, the objective of this research was to explore residual feed intake (RFI) models and to decreasing the test duration.

ABSTRACT.- Bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis cause important economic losses in livestock production. In Uruguay, the main aetiological agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis are Babesia bovis, B. bigemina and Anaplasma marginale. The aim of this work was to describe the outbreaks of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in northern Uruguay between 2016 and 2018. Convenience sampling was carried out. We worked with blood and organ samples from bovines with clinical signs and autopsy findings compatible with babesiosis and anaplasmosis. A total of 140 presumptive outbreaks were studied.

ABSTRACT. - This study aimed to investigate the prediction ability for growth and maternal traits using different low-density customized SNP arrays selected by informativeness and distribution of markers across the genome employing single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP). Phenotypic records for adjusted weight at 210 and 450 days of age were utilized. A total of 945 animals were genotyped with high-density chip, and 267 individuals born after 2008 were selected as validation population.

Genomic breeding values' prediction including populational selfing rate in an open-pollinated Eucalyptus globulus breeding population.

ABSTRACT.- In forest tree breeding programs, open-pollinated families are frequently used to estimate genetic parameters and evaluate genetic merit of individuals. However, the presence of selfing events not documented in the pedigree affects the estimation of these parameters. In this study, 194 open-pollinated families of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. trees were used to compare the precision of estimated genetic parameters and accuracies of predicted breeding values with the conventional pedigree-based model (ABLUP) and the pedigree-genomic single-step model (ssGBLUP).

"The Hardest Task"-peer review and the evaluation of technological activities.

ABSTRACT.- Technology development and innovation are fundamentally different from scientific research. However, in many circumstances, they are evaluated jointly and by the same processes. In these cases, peer review -the most usual procedure for evaluating research - is also applied to the evaluation of technological products and innovation activities. This can lead to unfair results and end up discouraging the involvement of researchers in these fields. This paper analyzes the evaluation processes in Uruguay's National System of Researchers.

This research sought to minimize inorganic arsenic levels in polished rice grain by using different irrigation and phosphorous fertilization practices while also maintaining crop yield and water productivity. Two experiments were conducted during seasons 2018?2019 and 2019?2020 using a split-plot design with three blocks, five irrigation treatments (main-plots) and two phosphorous levels (sub-plots). Irrigation treatments consisted of a traditional continuous flood (CF) control and four alternatives irrigation techniques with one or two drying events during the irrigation cycle.

Soil sampling depth and phosphorus extraction method for phosphorus in leguminous pastures.[Profundidad de muestreo del suelo y método de extracción de fósforo en pasturas de leguminosas].[Profundidade de amostragem e método de extração de fósforo em solos com pastagens de leguminosas].

Abstract: The current guidelines and recommendations for P fertilization in Uruguay can be improved by adjusting the sampling depth and analytical methods of testing soil P in pastures with different fertilization history. A set of field trials was con-ducted between2008 and 2012 on 14 sites of Uruguay for the purpose of comparing two sampling depths and three methods for assessing P availability by their correlation with annual dry matter yield response.
