From theory to practice:can LEAP/FAO biodiversity assessment guidelines be a useful tool for knowing the environmental status of livestock systems?

ABSTRACT.- Biodiversity loss is a global concern, and agriculture is one of the economic sectors responsible for this impact. The assessment of ecosystems under the influence of livestock production is essential for knowing their integrity and ability to provide ecosystem services. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the application of LEAP/FAO guidelines for quantitative assessment of biodiversity in the livestock sector at the local scale (farm level) in a group of six study cases in Uruguay.

ABSTRACT.- Purpose:Silicon (Si) accumulation by grasses alleviates diverse biotic and abiotic stresses. Despite this important functional role, we have limited understanding of how root microbial symbionts, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, affect Si uptake and even less about how Si supply and accumulation affect AM fungal colonisation. Our objective was to determine the nature of this two-way interaction in the model grass, Brachypodium distachyon. Methods:We grew B.

ABSTRACT.- Introduction:Bovine mastitis is the most common disease affecting the dairy industry, with staphylococci being considered as one of the most significant and prevalent causes. This study aimed to assess the presence of staphylococcal subclinical mastitis (SCM) in Uruguayan dairy farms and to identify Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) in milking cows. In addition, the antibiotic susceptibility of isolated staphylococci was evaluated.

ABSTRACT.- Apple pedestrian system allows performing all cultural practices from the ground and allows the mechanization of some practices such as thinning and pruning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of different training systems in a pedestrian orchard. A trial with ?Gala Baigent? (Brookfield®) apples was installed at INIA Las Brujas, Canelones, Uruguay, in 2014/2015 growing season. Five training systems were evaluated:one leader/spindle, three and four leaders, guyot (around 5 leaders), and horizontal palmette. Trees were grafted onto ?M.9 NAKB T337?

Management and productivity of key integrated crop-livestock system's in Uruguay:The Palo a Pique long-term experiments third phase.

Abstract:Integrated Crop Livestock Systems (ICLSs) use productive diversification as a strategy to improve productivity and land use efficiency. Pasture Crop Rotations are a part of ICLSs and imply a pasture phase included in the sequence of crops. The main reasons to include pastures in crop systems are low productivity of natural grasslands and increased crop yield after a pasture phase. Our objective was to analyze the productivity indicators and management of four ICLSs that combine crop and livestock production, with data collected over a 3 y period (2019?2022).

Refuge areas favor the presence of predators and herbivores in Bt soybean:a landscape perspective.

ABSTRACT.- Soybean plants that express various insecticidal proteins of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis have been widely adopted globally in many crop systems. This technology effectively controls the main defoliating pest species in most countries and reduces insecticide spray requirements. However, widespread use of Bt crops also generates high selection pressure against pest populations, leading to resistance concerns. Refuge areas are established to delay this phenomenon, but little is known about their other ecological functions.

ABSTRACT.- This study aimed to estimate prediction ability and genetic parameters for residual feed intake (RFI) calculated using a regression equation for each test (RFItest) and for the whole population (RFIpop) in Nellore beef cattle. It also aimed to evaluate the correlations between RFIpop and RFItest with growth, reproductive, and carcass traits. Genotypic and phenotypic records from 8354 animals were used. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to verify the adequacy of the regression equations applied to estimate the RFItest and RFIpop.
