ABSTRACT. As the biodiversity crisis worsens, its impact on economic and social development is becoming increasingly apparent. Strategies to tackle environmental degradation and climate change must therefore focus on ensuring that ecosystems can respond to high levels of pressure while continuing to provide services indispensable to human development and to life. Evidence is pointing to a bleak outlook if we continue on our current trajectory.
