In Uruguay the production of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Miller) in greenhouse conditions presents pollination issues that limit its yield. The use of Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) as pollinators can help overcome this problem as they perform, buzzing pollination, a behavior that makes them excellent pollinators of Solanaceae and particularly tomato. This study is the first in Uruguay to show the benefits of using native Bumblebees to improve tomato production in greenhouses.

Uruguay is the most export-oriented rice producing country in the word, selling around 95% of its total production in the international market.

En el año 2000 la Facultad de Agronomía (UDELAR), el Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (INIA) y el Ministerio de Ganadería, Agricultura y Pesca (MGAP) comenzaron un programa de selección de frutas nativas con posible potencial comercial, trabajo al que se le unieron más tarde otras instituciones y actores sociales. El trabajo de selección de frutas nativas se basa en la prospección y colecta de materiales interesantes desde el punto de vista frutícola a nivel nacional.
