Multi-season environmental life cycle assessment of lemons: A case study in south Uruguay.

ABSTRACT.- Lemons are a relevant agricultural commodity in Uruguay, mainly exported for fresh consumption. Food eco-labels are on the rise worldwide as consumers and authorities are increasingly demanding them. However, there is a lack of scientific studies estimating the environmental impacts of Uruguayan citrus production. This study aims to assess the environmental performance of lemon production in Uruguay taking into account inter-seasonal variability by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and following the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) guidelines.

Who is feeding on the pear psylla?. Applying molecular ecology for the biological control of Cacopsylla bidens.

ABSTRACT.- Biological control is an alternative strategy to control Cacopsylla bidens. The aim of this study was to untanglethe trophic network involving C. bidens as prey. Molecular techniques along with predator activity surveys were employed to evaluate predation on psylla. Feeding on C. bidens was detected for five predators:Chrysoperla externa, Chrysopidae sp., Hemerobiidae sp., Harmonia axyridis and Cycloneda sanguinea. All these predators begin to feed earlier in the season, apart from C. externawhich fedds from the third psylla generation.

Susceptibility of pecan cultivars to Venturia effusa in Uruguay.

ABSTRACT.- Pecan scab caused by Venturia effusa is the main crop disease affecting leaves and fruits, resulting in defoliation and yield and fruit quality losses. Recently, pecan groves expanded into Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina, where the temperate-humid climate is conducive for scab development. Chemical control is difficult given the height of adult trees which exceeds 20 m. Therefore, the strategy consists on selecting tolerant cultivars accompanied by cultural management aimed at providing a good ventilation and light interception.

Return bloom and yield of 'Rocha' pear trees are improved by Ethephon and Paclobutrazol.

ABSTRACT.- Flower induction and differentiation are complex phenomenon not fully understood in pear trees. Paclobutrazol (Pbz), Ethephon (Eth), and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) exogenous applications could be potential tools to increase return bloom and yield, and to manage the alternate bearing in some pear cultivars. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of Eth, Pbz, and NAA on return bloom and yield of 'Rocha' pear trees in different climatic conditions of Southern Brazil.

Ethylene evolution of flowers of different apple cultivars varies in timing and intensity. [Conference paper].

ABSTRACT.- Fruit set of some apple cultivars is low despite abundant flowering. This could be, among other things, due to ethylene production of the flowers and or short ovule longevity. 'Minneiska' apple has been notable for its low productivity if not managed adequately. To better understand the cause of the low fruit set presented by this cultivar, a series of trials evaluating ethylene evolution and fruit set were conducted from 2017 to 2019. Flowers/fruitlets of different apple cultivars showed a distinct pattern in ethylene evolution.

ABSTRACT.- 'GVU Yvyrá' is a new apple cultivar developed and released by "Grupo Viveros del Uruguay". Trees are rustic, vigorous, with good branch growth behavior, and presenting a low chill requirement. It presents early flowering, starting around September 1st, and its harvest begins before January 15th (in southern Uruguay). Large to very large fruits, with cone shape, approximately 90% red-brown blush and sweet, yellow colored flesh, and a good cold storage potential.

ABSTRACT.- Three major ontogenetic processes are distinguished in pome trees:flower induction, initiation, and differentiation and after that anthesis. Flower initiation is an irreversible process marked by histological changes and intensive mitotic activity. The formation of an apical dome is the first visible signal of floral initiation.
