Effect of temporary weaning and creep feeding on calf growth and the reproductive efficiency of their Hereford dams.
ABSTRACT.- The objective was to test if creep feeding (CF) improves the average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight of calves submitted to temporary weaning (TW) and if the combination of CF and TW improves conception and pregnancy rates of cows. Primiparous (n = 74) and primiparous and multiparous (n = 104) cows grazing native grasslands were used in experiment 1 and 2; respectively. The experimental design was in plots divided into complete random blocks with two replications.
What factors control the crude protein content variation of a basaltic "Campos" native grassland of South America?
ABSTRACT.- Native grasslands are the main source of food for livestock in the Campos region of South America. These forage resources are heterogeneous in species composition, grazing management, and soil fertility within a context of variable climate, all of which are factors that affect forage crude protein content over time and space. Despite the importance of protein in livestock nutrition, there is a gap in the knowledge of how fertilisation, sward height, and soil water availability influence the crude protein content of these grasslands.
Influence of different feeding strategies on carcass and meat quality of grassfed cull cows.
ABSTRACT.- Animal performance, carcass and meat quality characteristics of beef cull cows under different feeding strategies were compared. Cows were assigned to one of four grazing treatments combining different levels of forage allowance (FA) and supplementation rate (%of body weight, BW) using rice bran (RB):T1= FA2 % + RB0,T2 = FA4 % + RB0, T3= FA2 %+ RB 0.8 % and T4 = FA2 % + RB 1.6 %. Cows from T1 presented lower (P 0.05). Nonetheless, differences between treatments were found in n6 and n3 fatty acid contents (P 0.05).
Strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from pasture-based sheep systems - an EU project consortium view. [15]
ABSTRACT. - An international project ('Grass To Gas', 2019-2024) to combine expertise and generate new knowledge for the reduction of the potent methane (CH4) greenhouse gas (GHG) from sheep is underway.
