Forestry in Uruguay has grown exponentially for the last 20 years. Currently, plantations of Eucalyptus L’Hér. occupy 80% of the forested area in the country, while pine tree plantations occupy almost 20%. Following a large infestation of bark beetles in pine tree plantations in December 2009, three scolytine species have been of regular appearance: Cyrtogenius luteus (Blandford), Hylurgus ligniperda (F.), and Orthotomicus erosus Wollaston.
