Breeding for sheep parasite resistance in extensive production systems in Uruguay:From phenotype to genotype.

ABSTRACT.- Gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) are one of the main causes of economic losses for sheep farmers worldwide. The need for alternative control measures comes from increasingly critical anthelmintic resistance. One alternative is to include genetic resistance to GIP in breeding programmes, by selecting for worm faecal egg count (FEC). Using this selection criterion since 1994, Uruguay has included genetic resistance to GIP in the genetic evaluation of Australian Merino and Corriedale breeds.

Something old, something new, something borrowed : Evaluation of different neural network architectures for genomic prediction. [poster]

ABSTRACT.- Genome enabled prediction of complex traits aims to predict a measurable characteristic of an organism using their genetic information. In the present work we address diverse traits and organisms including Yeast growth, Wheat yield, Jersey bull fertility and various Holstein cattle milk-related traits. We benchmark several popular Machine Learning models: Bayesian and penalized linear regressions, kernel methods, and Decision Tree ensembles. Through exhaustive hyperparameter tuning we outperform state-of-the-art results in most datasets.

ABSTRACT.- Feathering in apple nursery trees is a critical operation used to increase the quality of planting material. Plant growth regulators (PGR) could be used to form feathers in apple nursery trees. The main goal was to study the impact of different PGR and concentrations on feathering promotion in different nursery apple trees.
