Abstract:Commercial tree plantations cover around a million ha in Uruguay, mostly with stands of eucalypt and pine trees. Uruguayan forestry was free of serious insect pest until the end of the twentieth century. Beginning in the 1990s, both forestry area and international trade experienced an exponential growth, followed by an increase of invasive insect records. More than half of the pests currently affecting Eucalyptus entered the country after 1995. The use of pesticides is greatly restricted, provided around 90% of the plantations are under FSC and/or PEFC certification schemes.

Modern textile tendencies show that consumers prefer light, soft, resistant, natural, and comfortable clothes, for which fine and superfine wools are in great demand, particularly at the high value markets (Whiteley, 2003). The main objective of the present study was to define sustainable stocking rates and grazing systems on native swards for fine and superfine wool production in the Basaltic region of Uruguay.

Lambs have a great potential to diversify and stimulate meat and wool production and economical returns within the industry. The main objective of this study was to evaluate different feeding and management alternatives for the production of high quality wool and meat as well as their effects on sward characteristics in the Basaltic region of Uruguay.

ABSTRACT The effect of energy intake during late gestation in beef cows on the placentas, behaviour and morphometry of the female calves at parturition and age at puberty was evaluated. Thirty-one British multiparous cows, inseminated by FTAI (fixed time artificial inseminated) and carrying female calves were assigned to two energy-feeding treatments on Day –90 (Day 0=parturition):i- 125% of requirements (AL, n=15) and ii- 75 % of requirements (BA; n=16). Duration of delivery and characteristics of the placenta were recorded in the cows.

La esquila a los 50 días de gestación de ovejas en pastoreo afectó positivamente el peso corporal pero no parámetros reproductivos y de salud de los corderos machos durante los primeros 18 meses de edad.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effects of shearing at 50 days of gestation on the productive, reproductive and response to a gastrointestinal parasite challenge of male offspring from weaning (104 d) to 18 months old.

ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the effects of maternal undernutrition induced by a lower natural pasture allowance during gestation on the histological characteristics of fetal, neonatal and adult Semitendinosus ovine muscle. Two experiments were carried out. In experiment 1, ewes were assigned to two nutritional treatments from 23 days before conception until day 123 of gestation:High pasture allowance (HPA) ewes grazed on natural grasslands at 10-12 kg dry matter (DM)/100 kg of live weight (LW)/day, while low pasture allowance (LPA) ewes grazed at 5-8 kg DM /100 kg of LW/day.

Realimentar las ovejas ad libitum luego de una restricción energética durante la mitad de la gestación no afectó el desempeño animal, la eficiencia de conversión del alimento y la calidad de la carne de los corderos.

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to evaluate maternal energy restriction in ewes from day 48 to 106 of gestation on pre- and post-weaning lambs` performance, carcass and meat quality when their dams were fed ad libitum after the restriction period. Ewes bearing single or twin lambs were assigned to two dietary treatments from day 48 to day 106 of gestation:restricted (R; n = 60) at 60% of their metabolizable energy (ME) requirements, or non-restricted (NR; n = 54) at 100% of their ME requirements. After the restriction period ewes grazed all together ad libitum until weaning.
