ABSTRACT. Grazing plays a key role in reducing the external inputs required for ruminant production and in alleviating feed-food competition. Beyond the production of meat and milk, grassland-based systems provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Agroecology and organic farming aim to reconcile natural resource management and food production, in the long term, based on the management of ecological processes.

Management Strategies for Lamb Production on Pasture-Based Systems in Subtropical Regions: A Review.

Sheep production on pasture plays an important role in subtropical climates around the world, with great economic and environmental relevance to those regions. However, this production is much lower than its true potential in subtropical regions, largely due to lack of knowledge of how to feed grazing lambs, and mitigate gastrointestinal parasite infections. Due to weather instability and the high growth rate of tropical grasses, it is difficult to adjust the quality and quantity of feed consumed by lambs.

Single-step genomic evaluations from theory to practice: using snp chips and sequence data in blupf90.

ABSTRACT. Single-step genomic evaluation became a standard procedure in livestock breeding, and the main reason is the ability to combine all pedigree, phenotypes, and genotypes available into one single evaluation, without the need of post-analysis processing. Therefore, the incorporation of data on genotyped and non-genotyped animals in this method is straightforward. Since 2009, two main implementations of single-step were proposed.

ABSTRACT. - Sustainable development of food production requires more productive, profitable, and resource-efficient farming systems. Economic efficiency depends on commercial yield, but also on the efficient use of inputs, their price, and the sale price of products; it is also related to farming system characteristics. This study aimed to assess resource endowment and structural characteristics of greenhouse tomato farms and how they affect the economic efficiency of tomato crop, delving into the analysis of the main causes of its variability.

ABSTRACT. Livestock production is being questioned for its greenhouse gas emissions. However, production systems influence multiple environmental variables and, in some cases, contribute to very valuable environmental services. This work summarizes information collected at 30 livestock production farms and four IN-IAs experimental fields allocated throughout the Uruguayan territory. A total of 231 bird species were recorded, 42 of them identified like priority conservation species. Of these species 10 are included in UICN lists and 19 in Uruguayan Red List.

ABSTRACT: This research outlines the fundamental elements of a pathway for transforming Uruguay?s rice sector in a way that is consistent with post-2015 SDGs. Uruguay is the most export-oriented rice producing country in the word, selling around 95% of its total production in the international market.

Diseases of Eucalyptus Plantations in Uruguay: Current State and Management Alternatives

Abstract: Commercial forestry in Uruguay is mainly based on non-native Eucalyptus and Pinus plantations. Eucalyptus is the most planted genera and covers approximately 730,000 ha. Currently, forest products represent one of the top three exports of the country. Over the last two decades, the number of reported pests that threatens commercial plantations has increased regularly, not only due to accidental introductions of exotic pests but also because of host shift of native pests and diseases from the native forest to the exotic forestry species.
